⚡️Here is your Chargers 2023 Draft class! Overall, it was an okay draft for the Chargers. They had 7 picks in 7 rounds. In my opinion, I’m grading this draft class a solid B for the Chargers. Read below to learn more about each player drafted and how it was a good or bad pick in order.
⚡️WR Quentin Johnston. This was the Chargers first pick in the draft. This was a surprising pickup. Wide Receiver wasn’t a huge need considering they have Allen, Williams, Palmer, and Guyton but Johnston is another deep threat. He is described as "a big man with a small man burst" and ranked No. 2 in FBS last year with 8.9 yards after the catch per reception and also had 19 missed tackles forced last season. Downside is that he did have a lot of dropped catches but hopefully can fix that.
⚡️OLB Tuli Tuipulotu. This is a good pickup for the Defensive line adding to the depth that’s already there. Injuries has been an issue for the Defense so Tuli will likely get some time in. He finishes his pressures with sacks and QB hits (leading the nation in 2022), and he’s versatile enough to line up inside or on the edge.
⚡️ILB Daiyan Henley. A great pick up to be honest. Used to be a wide receiver but moved to Linebacker in the middle of college. He’s got speed and ability to avoid blockers are outstanding. More depth to defensive line and some competition for Murray who has underperformed so far.
⚡️WR Derius Davis. Another Wide Receiver to add to depth but also the new Chargers Return Specialist. Pretty solid pick up as this was a need. Davis had five punt return touchdowns in college and also returned a kickoff for a touchdown. He averaged 15 yards per punt return on 44 career returns.
⚡️OG Jordan McFadden. Sort of a steal at Round 5. Considered to be a great blocker and only allowed 2 QB hits in his 5 year college career. He can play any position on O-Line and some good depth added.
⚡️DT Scott Matlock. Some depth for Defensive line. Has a great motor and heavy hands. 23 pressures, 3 sacks, 25 run stops last year. Can hopefully develop into a key player one day for Chargers.
⚡️QB Max Duggan. This wasn’t a need for the Chargers and seemed like they only picked him up because there was no one else to draft. Duggan will never play as long as Herbert and Easton Stick are healthy. Unless they plan to let Stick go next year or God forbid Herbert and Stick are injured, Duggan doesn’t provide much need for the Chargers.
