Tony Gonsolin Will Undergo Tommy John Surgery

Dodgers RHP Tony Gonsolin is undergoing Tommy John Surgery on September 1, performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the team announced. His 2024 season is officially in serious jeopardy and likely missing all of next season.

Tony Gonsolin was placed on the 15-day injured list on August 19, 2023, with right forearm inflammation. He had been experiencing right elbow trouble for several weeks, but the Dodgers medical staff had assured him that he was not at risk of further injury. However, after his start on August 18, in which he allowed 10 runs in 3.1 innings, Gonsolin and the Dodgers decided to shut him down. An MRI taken on August 22 revealed some form of structural damage to Gonsolin's elbow. And today it was revealed he needs Tommy John Surgery. He will miss the rest of this season and a good chance all of 2024 season. He went 8-5 with a 4.98 ERA in 20 starts this season.

Tommy John surgery is a common surgery for pitchers who have torn their ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). The UCL is a ligament that connects the humerus (upper arm bone) to the radius (forearm bone). It helps to stabilize the elbow joint and prevent it from moving too much. It does require a long recovery time. Most pitchers need at least 12 months to recover from the surgery. However, some pitchers have been able to return to pitching even sooner. Hopefully Gonsolin can pitch in 2024 season.
