RB Austin Ekeler Staying With The Chargers… For Now

After an off-season in which Austin Ekeler requested to be traded when Chargers wouldn't negotiate a contract extension, the Chargers star Running Back is staying in LA and will have close to $2 million in incentives added to his deal for this season, per Adam Schefter.

This a win-win for both Chargers and Ekeler, as Chargers keep their RB and Ekeler will be a free agent after this season at age 28. Although this is probably more of a win for the Chargers. An extra $2 million is not a lot of money for a star player.

Ekeler scored an NFL-best 18 touchdowns last season, while rushing for a team-high 915 yards and catching 107 passes for 702 yards. An often-used target out of the backfield, Ekeler also led the NFL with 822 yards after the catch. After doing all that in a critical role, you'd think he should be a top paid player in his position. But Ekeler's average salary of $6.125 million ranked 13th in the NFL. It's no wonder he's upset with his current salary. But the good news is that Ekeler is happy for now given that there is an agreement. After the 2023-2024 season is up, Ekeler will be a free agent and hopefully resigns with the Chargers with a pretty nice contract.
