Rams Sign WR Tyler Johnson

The Los Angeles Rams have added a new wide receiver to the team. Today, Rams have agreed to terms with wide receiver Tyler Johnson. So who is Tyler Johnson?

Johnson, 24, was drafted as a 2020 fifth-round draft pick by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of the University of Minnesota (161st overall). For the Buccaneers, he recorded 48 receptions for 529 yards and two touchdowns across 31 games (six starts) in two seasons. He won a Super Bowl with Tampa Bay even though he hardly contributed. After the Super Bowl win and before the 2022 season, he was acquired via waivers by the Houston Texans on August 31, 2022.

There, he played two games with Houston and recorded no stats before being released in late October. Then, he bounced around practice squads (Buccaneers and Raiders) when finally Rams signed him.

So why did the Rams sign him? Johnson is a great Wide Receiver with a bunch of potential who never really got to show it in the NFL. Johnson is 6-foot-1 and put up big numbers in his final two seasons at Minnesota, catching 78 passes for 1,169 yards as a junior in 2018 and 86 passes for 1,318 yards in 2019. In those 2 years, he got 25 touchdown passes. With stats like that, you deserve playing in the NFL. He hasn't really had a shot in showing what he got in his limited playing time in the NFL so this can be a low risk, high reward signing. The full contract is not out yet but was probably signed for a low cost.

Don't the Rams have enough Wide Receivers? Yes, but the Rams currently only have 2 proven wide receivers (Cooper Kupp and Van Jefferson) while the rest aren't really proven yet. So if someone gets injured or other wide receivers are struggling, it's good to have an option like Tyler Johnson. No one really knows if Johnson will even play much next season, but still a good low risk signing for the Rams.
