I'm excited about this move. Angels have recalled former number one overall pick, OF Mickey Moniak from Triple-A Salt Lake. Following Wednesday’s game, INF Jake Lamb was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake. Although, Moniak has been disappointing so far in his time in the Majors, I'm excited because this year Moniak is starting to hit pretty well.
Moniak had a very nice Spring Training this season - .409 AVG, 1.185 OPS, 3 HR, 11 RBI. Even though he was one of the best hitters for the Angels in Spring Training, that did not earn him a Major League spot. The reason he didn’t make the team initially was so he’d get everyday at-bats in AAA because he would not in MLB and that would mess with his development. He's still not proven and underperforming as a former number one pick so the Angels want to develop him a bit more.
He started the season in the Minor Leagues and was still hitting pretty well. He had a .308 AVG, .940 OPS, 8 HR, 23 RBI in 130 AB. Not bad at all. Of course none of this is at the major league level but when you have that kind of stat line in Triple A, you deserve a major league chance. According to Angels reporter, Rhett Bollinger, The Angels brought up Mickey Moniak because they're facing a lot of right-handers this road trip and Nevin wanted to get his OFers some rest, especially with an 11:30 am game on Sunday. Moniak is expected to be in the lineup tomorrow and Sunday. He probably won't get too many at-bats after that but he might if he brings in some good hitting, baserunning, and fielding whenever he does get the chance to play.
