LA Galaxy Appoint Will Kuntz as General Manager

Today, Will Kuntz has been appointed as the general manager of the LA Galaxy as they strive to reclaim their position at the pinnacle of Major League Soccer. He was first hired earlier this year for the Galaxy as the Senior Vice President of Player Personnel.

The team has faced a challenging period, missing the playoffs in five of the last seven years, a stark contrast to their earlier success of winning three MLS Cups in four years a decade ago. Despite reaching the Western Conference final in 2022, the Galaxy experienced a downturn this year, finishing 13th in the West. In an effort to reverse their fortunes, the team has entrusted Kuntz for his many years of experience. Prior to his time with the Galaxy, he spent the previous six seasons with LAFC (2017-22) where he served as Senior Vice President of Soccer Operations and Assistant General Manager. At LAFC, Kuntz helped manage and assemble the roster that won an MLS Cup in 2022 and Supporters’ Shield titles in 2019 and 2022. Prior to LAFC, Kuntz spent three years at Major League Soccer’s league office, serving as the Director of Player Relations, working with the league’s clubs in franchise salary budget management, the development of strategic league initiatives and the negotiation of the 2015 MLS Collective Bargaining Agreement. He also spent 10 years with the MLB Yankees before that, where Kuntz began as a summer intern and progressed to Manager of Pro Scouting under long-time general manager Brian Cashman. So Kuntz has a lot of team management knowledge and experience.

In his new role, Kuntz will oversee soccer operations from the first team to the academy, managing various aspects such as scouting, player acquisitions, salary cap, and budgets. He will report directly to AEG president and CEO Dan Beckerman. LA head coach Greg Vanney, who assumed the sporting director role last December, will now report to Kuntz. Recognized as one of the league's promising front office executives, Kuntz brings a unique background to the position. This is exciting news and a hopefully a great move by the Galaxy front office.
