LA Dodgers 2023 MLB Trade Deadline Recap

The 2023 MLB Tradeline Deadline is officially over. No more MLB trades are allowed unless it's a player on waivers. Here's a recap of all the big trades so far this season for the Dodgers including today's Deadline trade.

  • LHP Ryan Yarbrough - acquired from the Kansas City Royals for 1B Devin Mann and SS Derlin Figueroa. This trade seemed a bit desperate. One of the biggest needs for the Dodgers is starting pitching. They almost had a deal with Eduardo Rodriguez and missed out on Jack Flaherty, Dylan Cease, Lucas Giolito, Justin Verlander, and others. There were no rumors on Yarbrough so it seemed like they looked for any starting pitcher left which turned out to be Yarbrough. Not to say Yarbrough is bad. There is definitely much more worse starting pitchers out there. But Yarbrough, who has been in the MLB since 2018, has had an ERA between 4 and 5 throughout his career which is not the best. Not to mention, he's been used as a reliever and starting pitching so he is not a consistent starter. And what they gave up is a little tough as well. Devin Mann has been nice in the Minors this season and Figueroa is a young prospect from the Dominican Republic. And Yarbrough will be a free agent at the end of this season. But perhaps maybe the Dodgers see something in him that they can fix. We'll see. My Trade grade: C

  • RHP Joe Kelly & Lance Lynn - acquired from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for RH starter Nick Nastrini (in Double-A), RH reliever Jordan Leasure (Double-A) and OF Trayce Thompson. Now right off the bat, this seems like a bad trade but not really. Yes, Lance Lynn has one of the worst ERAs among all qualified starting pitchers but he's had a nice career which started in 2011. He was a 2x All-Star as well. According to some sources, Dodgers believe they can fix him and they've proven they can with other pitchers before. Plus, they really need starting pitchers. Now With Joe Kelly, who's been in the MLB since 2012, played for the Dodgers for 3 seasons so they know exactly what they're getting. He does have a high ERA this season as a reliever, but Dodgers believe they can fix him too. When he was a Dodger, he was a great reliever. Both players have a club option for next season. The Dodgers did have to give up 2 pitching prospects and Trayce Thompson, who struggled a lot this season. If the Dodgers can actually fix Lynn and Kelly, this will be a fantastic trade. My Trade grade: B

  • SS Amed Rosario - acquired from the Cleveland Guardians in exchange for Noah Syndergaard. The fact that they got something decent for Syndergaard makes this a great trade. Syndergaard has been an awful starting pitcher this season and had many chances to show he's still got it. Finally, the Dodgers moved on and got a decent hitter in return. Rosario plays primarily shortstop but apparently the Dodgers are trying to shift him to 2nd base and sometimes outfield, which he's played before. Currently, they don't really have an everyday second baseman so Rosario is a great addition and speedy, leading in triples last season. The only downside is he is not the best defensively, but nonetheless, a great trade. He will be a free agent after this season, but should be okay as Gavin Lux should be back at 2nd base next season. My Trade grade: A

  • INF/OF Kike Hernández - acquired from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for right-handed reliever Nick Robertson -- who has thrown 10.1 big league innings this year -- and right-handed reliever Justin Hagenman. Now we all know Kike very well, who has spent most of his career with the Dodgers. Of course he is not the same given that he's older, but a great addition as the Dodgers don't really have a versatile player which is important to have on a team. Not only that, he brings great energy to the team which is also important to have. They did have to give up a decent pitching prospect and Robertson, who hasn't been too well this season, but was worth trading for Kike. My Trade grade: B

These were the big names they traded for during the 2023 MLB season. Of course there were more smaller trades Dodgers made but the ones I mentioned above are the big ones. The Dodgers MLB tradeline could have been better to be honest. They had a lot of needs and didn't trade for any big names. Hopefully what they got is enough to win it all, but to be honest I don't think so. Overall, I'm grading the Dodgers Trade Deadline, including trades made the past month, a C. More could have been done.
