LA Angels 2023 Trade Deadline Recap

The 2023 MLB Tradeline Deadline is officially over. No more MLB trades are allowed unless it's a player on waivers. Here's a recap of all the big trades so far this season for the Angels including today's Deadline trade.

  • RHP Dominic Leone - acquired from the NY Mets for minor league INF Jeremiah Jackson. Good trade? Not really sure. Leone hasn't had the best season this year but Angels need relievers. He had a 4.40 ERA, 33 Ks, in 30.2 innings this season so far. His last 7 games he has a 3.00 ERA with 7 Ks. Hopefully he's starting to pitch better. Leone is a veteran reliever who been in the league since 2014. He has had some nice seasons and definitely still has it but what they gave up is questionable. Angels received a few months of him and cash considerations for Jeremiah Jackson, who was Angels' No. 9 prospect, per MLB Pipeline and 2018 second round pick. My Trade grade: C-

  • 1B C.J. Cron & OF Randal Grichuk - acquired from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league LHP Mason Albright and RHP Jake Madden. Cron and Grichuk were both originally drafted by the Angels. Grichuk never played for the Angels until this year while Cron played 4 major league seasons with the Angels so they know what they're getting. Cron was a nice hitter and first baseman during his time with the Angels before they traded him away. He only got better when he left and was an All-Star in 2022. Cron is having a nice season this year as well despite suffering from a few injuries. The Angels don't really have a everyday first baseman especially with Jared Walsh struggling hard. Cron was a nice addition for the Angels. As for Randal Grichuk, he's also a nice pick up. With Taylor Ward, heading to the 60-day IL, Trout Out, Adell on IL, picking up Grichuk was nice. He's been in the league since 2014 and has been a solid hitter over his career. He's arguably having his best season of his career so far offensively hitting .308 AVG, 9 HR, 28 RBI, and .867 OPS so far. Both players are free agents after this season so giving up 2 starting pitching prospects is tough but as Angels are in a "win now" mode then this trade makes sense. My Trade grade: B

  • RHP Lucas Giolito & Reynaldo Lopez - acquired from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league LHP Ky Bush and C Edgar Quero. This was arguably Angels best trade this season. They got a solid starting pitcher and solid reliever for a pitcher who has struggled a lot in Minors and for a Catcher they probably don't need since Logan O'Hoppe will be their future catcher. Angels biggest needs are pitchers. I wrote more about Giolito and Lopez in a difference article so you can find that under "Angels" on my website. The only bad thing is that both the pitchers the Angels got are free agents after this season but that doesn't mean they won't re-sign. Angels made it clear they're going big this season especially since they said they're not trading Ohtani, who may leave after this season. My Trade grade: A-

  • INF Mike Moustakas - acquired from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league RHP Connor Van Scoyoc. He is good to have especially with Rendon always getting injured and Drury and Urshela out and Fletcher playing bad. Moustakas was once a very good hitter and slugger and a 3x All-Star but these past few years he's been bad. Fortunately, this year he's starting to pick things up slowly and Angels saw that so they made the trade. And what they gave up wasn't too big either; it was a pitching prospect but a struggling one so this was a good trade for the Angels. Especially with Moustakas playing well for the Angels so far. My Trade grade: B+

  • INF Eduardo Escobar - acquired from the New York Mets in exchange for minor league right-handed pitchers Landon Marceaux and Coleman Crow. Like Moustakas, he is good to have especially with Rendon always getting injured and Drury and Urshela out and Fletcher playing bad. And like Moustakas, Escobar has been in the league for a while, since 2011, and was a great hitter throughout his career and an All-Star in 2021. Unfortunately, he is getting older and not hitting as good this year. Nice to have him around along with Moustakas until Rendon and Drury get back which is hopefully soon. This trade is a bit questionable since they gave up 2 pitching prospects for a player who's a free agent after this season. My Trade grade: C

These were the big names they traded for during the 2023 MLB season. Of course there were more smaller trades Angels made but the ones I mentioned above are the big ones. Not a bad MLB tradeline for the Angels especially since they are going "all-in" this season before Ohtani will probably leave. Overall, I'm grading the Angels Trade Deadline, including trades made the past month, a solid B. Considering the situation they're in, this was a good trade deadline for them.
