The Anaheim Ducks have made a trade that sends defenseman Ilya Lyubushkin to the Toronto Maple Leafs. As part of the deal, the Ducks will receive a 2025 3rd round pick while agreeing to retain 50% of Lyubushkin's salary. Furthermore, in a separate aspect of the trade, the Hurricanes will obtain a 6th round pick and retain 25% of Lyubushkin's salary. This trade marks a strategic maneuver for all teams involved as they aim to bolster their respective rosters for the remainder of the season. So what does this mean for the Ducks?
Ilya Lyubushkin is a nice defensemen but he's nothing special and not a must have. In August of last year, Ducks acquired Lyubushkin from the Sabres for a 4th round pick. So basically, they converted their 4th round pick to a 3rd round by trading Lyubushkin. Pretty nice move for the Ducks. Yes, they are still paying for 50% of Lyubushkin but it's not like they are planning to spend a ton of money for some stars anyway. They're well below in team standings this year but also it's not a lot of money that they're retaining anyway. Great move for the Ducks!
