Dodgers Trade Manuel Margot, Re-Sign Kike Hernandez

Today, Dodgers made some key front office moves! Outfielder Manuel Margot, who was set to start today, minor league IF Rayne Doncon, and cash considerations were traded to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for minor league IF Noah Miller. With this move, Dodgers made room to re-sign IF/OF Kiké Hernández on a one-year deal, $4 million deal. Twins get outfield depth, Dodgers get relief from the $12 million owed to Margot and a former comp-round pick. The Dodgers are also sending $6 million to the Twins to help cover part of Manuel Margot’s 2024 salary. So what does this move mean and who is Noah Miller?

To refresh your memory, Manuel Margot was acquired last December along with Tyler Glasnow. But it was clear that Margot wasn't needed and was a top trade target. While he's a solid hitter, there's really no room for him in the outfield. With Kike, he can play basically any infield or outfield position so the versatility is a plus. Kike also hit pretty good for the Dodgers when he was acquired last year: .262 AVG and .731 OPS. Not to mention Kike is a good postseason hitter which Dodgers need. Plus Margot is more expensive than Kike and Kike is arguably better. So trading Margot is a no brainer. Essentially, you can see today's acquisitions as Kike for Margot and Rayne Doncon for Noah Miller. Rayne Doncon is an international prospect who probably won't see MLB time for a few years. Hard to say how good he can be down the line. While Noah Miller is a compensatory pick, usually taken after the first round. Pretty high draft pick so one can argue Miller is the better player than Doncon. But too early to say.

Noah Miller, 21, was the 36th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. He has a career .644 OPS in the minor leagues and was ranked #23 on the Twins’ MLB Pipeline top prospects list at the end of last year. He can play shortstop and second base. Right now he's playing in the Class-A advanced level of the Minors so we probably won't see him in the Majors for a few years. Nonetheless, a solid acquisition for the Dodgers.

So were these good moves for the Dodgers? Yes. They moved Margot who was kind of useless for the Dodgers and brought back Kike who does more than Margot and a energy starter for the Dodgers. They also acquired a high draft pick which is a great addition to their stacked farm. It did hurt a bit though giving up Rayne Doncon, who may or may not be a good MLB player one day. But time will tell. Overall, great moves for the Dodgers today.
