Dodgers To Call Up Pitcher Emmet Sheehan

With no one to start for tonight's game against the Giants, the Dodgers are going to select right-hander Emmet Sheehan to their roster. The plan is to start him tonight’s game, making his major league debut. The Dodgers do have an opening on their 40-man roster from designating Adam Kolarek for assignment earlier this week but they will need a corresponding move to get Sheehan onto the active roster. No move has been made yet but will probably see one pretty soon. So who is Emmet Sheehan?

Sheehan, 6-foot-5 and 23 years old, is a 2021 6th-round pick, 192nd overall drafted by the Dodgers. This season, he was 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA in 12 games (10 starts) at Double-A Tulsa. Pretty impressive especially with all experiments going on in Double-A. He struck out 88 batters in 53.1 innings.

So why call up Emmet Sheehan? Originally, the Dodgers were going to have a bullpen game tonight with no starting pitcher. But the bullpen has been pitching a lot this week and an overload of pitching can cause some injuries that the Dodgers definitely don't need. Not to mention, the Dodgers bullpen has one of the worst ERA's in the league. So if there's a good chance that the Dodgers might lose having a bullpen game and that they're fatigued, might as well call up someone from the Minors to start. Sheehan has been pitching well in the Minors so this is the perfect time to see if he's ready for the big leagues. Other starting pitchers haven't been doing so well or are not ready in the Minors, so Sheehan is the guy. Hopefully, he is good enough to stay in the Majors.
