Chargers Officially Hire Joe Hortiz As The New General Manager

The Los Angeles Chargers have officially hired Joe Hortiz as their new General Manager, following the finalization of the deal last night. Joe Hortiz, a prominent figure in the NFL, previously served in various key roles with the Baltimore Ravens, contributing significantly to their success. Hortiz has been in Baltimore for 16 seasons with John Harbaugh, the brother of new Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh. So who is Joe Hortiz and why did Chargers hire him as their new General Manager?

First off, here are some highlights of his career:

  • Extensive experience with the Baltimore Ravens, starting as a personnel assistant in 1998 and working his way up to positions such as pro scout, area scout, director of college scouting, and director of player personnel.

  • Key role in the Ravens' achievements, including two Super Bowl wins, five AFC Championship game appearances, seven AFC North division titles, and 15 playoff appearances.

  • Renowned for his talent evaluation skills, which led to the selection of notable players like T Ronnie Stanley (6th overall in 2016) and Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs.

  • Helped pick out a nice draft class for the Ravens last year which included Zay Flowers, Trenton Simpson, Tavius Robinson.

So there you have it. He's got a ton of experience and knows how to find the right guys. Although he didn't call the shots with the Ravens, he contributed a ton to drafting and developing great Ravens players. And it showed as the Ravens have been one of the best teams this season. The experience and connection to Ravens coach John Harbaugh, Jim’s brother, since 2008 was the dealbreaker to picking Hortiz as the Chargers GM. Is this a good move? It should be but only time will tell. Let's see.
