The Los Angeles Angels have given up. They placed starter Lucas Giolito, relievers Matt Moore and Reynaldo López, and outfielders Hunter Renfroe and Randal Grichuk on waivers. So what does this mean? So for MLB, when a player is placed on waivers, it means that he is being made available to all 30 teams. Any team can claim the player and add him to their 40-man roster, however, the waiver priority is determined by a team's record, with the team with the worst record having the highest priority.
What does this mean for the Angels? Well, they have given up trying to make it to the postseason. They're 11.5 games back with about a month left to play and are not showing any hope. This will be a pure salary dump. Because there are no longer any August trades, all they will get from the transactions is salary relief. Teams that claim the players will need to only pay their salaries for the rest of the season. So if the Angels aren't going to the postseason, there's no point in putting the money into it. All the players the Angels waived have thier contract ending after this season anyway and will likely sign somewhere else. The other reason why they were waived is it lets the Angels test out some Minor League players who can potentially play everyday next season. This will help Angels understand who they need to sign this off-season and who they can use from their minor league farm. Sad to see these players go and sad Angels had another disappointing season, but it is now time to prepare for next season.
