Yesterday, the Los Angeles Angels had inked a one-year deal with right-handed relief pitcher Jose Cisnero, valued at $1.75 million. Cisnero, aged 34, posted a record of 3-4 with a 5.31 ERA across 63 games during the 2023 season with the Detroit Tigers. Additionally, he secured 14 holds, 2 saves, pitched 59.1 innings, recorded 70 strikeouts, and issued 25 walks. To make room for Cisnero on the 40-man roster, the club has designated Livan Soto for assignment.

So who is Jose Cisnero and why did Angels sign him?

José Luis Cisnero is a 34-year-old right-handed relief pitcher hailing from the Dominican Republic. He just joined the Los Angeles Angels yesterday, following a five-season stint with the Detroit Tigers.

Career Overview:

  • MLB Debut: April 22, 2013, with the Houston Astros.

  • Had a 4 year break from MLB 2015-2018 to work on his pitching elsewhere.

  • Teams: Houston Astros (2013-2014), Detroit Tigers (2019-2023), Los Angeles Angels (2024-present).

  • Career regular season ERA: 3.99.

  • Career regular season Strikeouts: 275.

  • Career regular season innings: 259.1 (255 games)

Career Highlights:

  • Played a pivotal role in the Tigers' bullpen in 2021 with 67 appearances, securing a 4-4 record and boasting a 3.65 ERA.

  • Led all Tigers pitchers in appearances from 2019 to 2023.

  • 1.08 ERA in 28 appearances in 2022.

Pitching Traits:

  • Known for his high-velocity fastball, averaging around 96 mph and occasionally reaching 99.9 mph.

  • Possesses an effective slider, serving as his primary off-speed pitch, and proving effective against both right-handed and left-handed hitters.

  • Demonstrates remarkable durability, with over 60 appearances 2 of his past 3 years.

So there you have it. Not the best reliever but he's pretty solid and Angels need relief pitching. Although he had a poor season, his previous years shows that he is a solid reliever so hopefully he can bounce back this year which can happen. He joins new relievers Adam Cimber, Luis Garcia, Robert Stephenson, and Matt Moore in the bullpen. That's 5 new relievers that the Angels will have for the upcoming season. Not bad as the bullpen is one of the Angels biggest weaknesses. Let's hope it gets better this season.
