2024 LA Dodgers Trade Deadline Recap

With the 2024 MLB trade deadline officially passed yesterday, there will be no more trades allowed for the remainder of the season. That means if Dodgers want to make some changes to the squad using external help then they can’t. Luckily, Dodgers made some key moves this trade deadline. Let’s take a recap of what happened.

Over the last two days the Dodgers have acquired Tommy Edman, Michael Kopech, Amed Rosario, Kevin Kiermaier and Jack Flaherty. The biggest acquisition being starting pitcher, Jack Flaherty! And what they had to give up was basically nothing. Here are the full trades for each player acquired:

  • Starting Pitcher Jack Flaherty - Acquired from the Detroit Tigers for 1B/C Thayron Liranzo (Dodgers' No. 8 prospect) and shortstop Trey Sweeney (Dodgers' No. 22 prospect). Steal! Liranzo wont be needed for a while for the Dodgers and Sweeney is a #22 prospect. Flaherty, 28 years old, is a former 1st round pick who has been a solid starting pitching his whole career. This year he is having one of his best seasons posting a 2.95 ERA in 18 starts.  Among pitchers with at least 100 innings, his 32 K% ranks fifth in all of baseball and also trimmed his walk rate to a career-best 4.6%. He’ll be a free agent after this season but if he does well for the Dodgers, I can’t imagine they don’t re-sign him and he is a Dodger fan.

  • Utility man Tommy Edman - Acquired from the St. Louis Cardinals in a 3-team trade with the Chicago White Sox. Dodgers had to give up Miguel Vargas, Alexander Albertus, and Jeral Perez. Giving up Miguel Vargas was tough but he hasn’t lived up to expectations and Dodgers basically got an upgrade with Edman. Prospects, Perez and Albertus, were international players who probably won’t see time in MLB for a while. Edman is a utility man who can play just about any infield/outfield position and won a Gold Glove at second base and a Fielding Bible Award as a multi-position player. Very nice defensive pick up. He is also a solid hitter. Edman had wrist surgery in October and is currently on the 60-day injured list. His rehab assignment was stalled by an ankle sprain and finally returned to game action last week. So far Edman hit .207/.294/.241 in eight games with Double-A Springfield, all eight games at designated hitter. Edman said he was ready to play second base for the Cardinals’ Triple-A affiliate Memphis beginning Tuesday, but then was traded to the Dodgers. Unclear yet when he’ll be activated, but should be soon. Great pick up!

  • RHP Michael Kopech - acquired from the Chicago White Sox in the 3-team trade with Tommy Edman. Kopech is a former 1st round pick spent most of his career as a starting pitcher but transitioned to the bullpen this season. He posted a 4.74 ERA this season but striking out 59 batters over 43 2/3 innings. Kopech ranks in the 99th percentile in fastball velocity and in the 89th percentile in expected batting average against. His whiff percentage is also in the 86th percentile. Nice addition to the Dodgers bullpen.

  • Utility man Amed Rosario - Acquired from the Rays for in exchange for minor league RHP Michael Flynn. Rosario was acquired near the trade deadline last season by the Dodgers as well. This year for the Rays, he has a .307 AVG in 76 games. Dodgers are in need of a SS while Mookie is out. Rosario can also play 2B, 3B, and outfield. Solid pickup.

  • CF Kevin Kiermaier - Acquired from the Blue Jays for Ryan Yarbrough. Kiermaier has been in the league since 2013 and won 4 gold gloves and 1 platinum glove award. He announced he’s retiring at the end of the season. Not the best hitter but the Dodgers are in need of a great defensive center fielder.

So that was the Dodgers trade deadline. I would grade it a solid A. It would of been a C- but acquiring Jack Flaherty at the last minute was clutch. Let’s hope these new acquisitions make a positive impact for the team.
